This tree, also known as the “Swamp Red Oak”, “Swamp Spanish Oak”, “Bottomland red oak”, “Elliot Oak”, and “Red oak”, is a variety of the southern red oak. This species is the largest of the southern red oaks reaching heights of 100’ to 130’ and diameters of 3’ to 5’. The leaves have 5-11 broad shallow lobes with whitish hairs beneath & smooth cherry like bark- similar to the black cherry tree (which is a gray-black, flaky or scaly- similar to an alligators back). The wood is a valuable timber source and is used for lumber, pulp, furniture, cabinets, veneer, millwork, and fuel. Historically, it has been used for making tannin and medicines. This species is found in well-drained lowland soils from southeastern Virginia to north western Florida and eastern Texas.
